 FIFTY YEARS AGO

New athletics stadium at Jenner Park, Barry officially opened on Saturday 19 May 1962. An athletics meeting was held, which incorporated a match between the Welsh AAA and the Southern Counties. Lynn Davies was beaten by Fred Alsop in the long jump, but jumped a windy 7.39.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

In 1952 after almost a week of continuous rain, the course at Caerleon for the Welsh Senior Cross Country Champs was in a heavy condition. Norman Wilson made light of the conditions and the opposition to win, completely out on his own, and equal W G Matthew's feat of 1934 by taking both the junior and senior titles in the same season.

Aim

The aim of AthleticsStatsWales is to try and give as complete a record as possible of the statistical history of athletics in Wales from the earliest times to the present day.  It is vital that information about our sport is not lost.

Track and field, cross country and road running will be covered, although by virtue of its greater complexity, track and field will inevitably be the largest section.

Statistics will be the main focus of this site, though it is hoped to include articles on various topics. Information will be kept up to date and therefore a permanent statistical record will be maintained. It is hoped that the site will eventually give a complete picture of the sport in Wales.

Some of the information first appeared in the book 'History of Welsh Athletics', published in 2000, written by John Collins, Alan Currie, Brenda Currie, Mike Walters and Clive Williams, who was also the editor.

This is the start of an ongoing project and information will be posted on the website in stages.

Under each section in the menu bar, details will be given about the type of information it is hoped to provide in the long term.

To begin with an attempt has been made to try and place some information into each of the named sections.
