Athletics events stole the show at Pontypridd Council's Air Show on Whit Monday 1960.  By their conduct and sportmanship the athletes were a credit to Welsh Athletics and the people of Pontypridd were quick to show their appreciation.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Troedyrhiw AC decided in 1970 to hold track events at the Afon Taf track instead of their annual road races.

They were run in complete darkness and the timekeepers had to use cigarette lighters to read

their watches.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO

In 1950 the Welsh AAA instituted a Plaque of Honour for valued services rendered by members and the first award was made posthumously to the late

Mr E W O'Donnell.

The 76th Welsh Senior XC Champs held at a cold, wet and windy Swansea on

2 Feb 1980 were a bit

of an anti climax.

Steve Jones and Tony Simmons broke away from the field and decided to

run in together to create the first ever dead heat in the history of the race.

Representative Matches

CROSS COUNTRY

In 1980 the first ever cross country match featuring a Welsh Schools Junior team against a team representing  Welsh Athletics was held at Cantonian High School, Cardiff on 29 March.  The Welsh team won both the male and the female events.  The male event featured many athletes who went on to become well known names on the Welsh and UK scene, including Ieuan Ellis, Nigel Adams, Nick Boughey and Geoff Hill.

From 1991 attempts were made to expand the fixture and other teams were invitied to take part, for example Scottish Schools, Irish Schools and Midlands Schools, but the last event was held in 2006.

For each match positions and times are given for the athletes representing the Welsh Schools and Welsh Athletics.  As the name for the governing body for Welsh Athletics has changed many times over the years, it was decided just to use the word 'Wales' in the results.  The results are not complete and attempts have been made to find first names, as results in the early days did not always give them.
